Simple Rules for the ADA

Permanent Signs: Those designating permanent rooms and spaces are required to comply with the ADA guidelines

• Characters must be between 5/8" and 2" in height.
• Grade 2 Braille required.
• Text is to be sans serif or simple serif type and upper case only. (other fonts available, per request)
• Characters are to be raised a minimum of 1/32".
• Pictograms, when used, may or may not be raised.
• Pictograms are to be alone within a 6" x 6" field.
• Written description should accompany pictogram.
• Characters and background to be matte or non-glare finish with substantial contrast. (70-30% rule, refer to color chart – attached)
• Signs are to be mounted on the latch side of the door 60" from centerline of sign to floor.

DIRECTIONAL OR INFORMATIONAL SIGNS
Characters and background are to be matte or non-glare finish with substantial contrast.
Characters can be upper and lower case and should be sized for viewing distance (approximately 1" for every 50’ of distance). Raised copy or Braille are required for these signs.

OVERHEAD SIGNS
Characters and background are to be matte or non-glare finish with substantial contrast.
Characters are to be a minimum of 3" in height. Signs must be a minimum of 80" clearance between the sign and the floor.
